  • The First 48 Racially Biased

Nice show & thanks to all the officers who risk their safety to protect our communities, However, this show is very biased in the fact that it depicts ONLY the Black communities across the nation as that which is full of criminals, gang violence & drug saturated!

One would almost think that there are NO White people who commit the same types of crime(s) in those cities!!

Or is is that the Police Depts. in the White communities of those (& other) cities don't permit the expolitation which is SO VERY presented by this programmings directors!!

SPIKE TV airs a show 'DEA' which is much more evenly balanced! I can no longer accept A&E uneveness & have chosen to no longer watch this show (as if they'd really give a &*(&^%%$% !!

I have discussed this also within my circle of contacts & they also agree! If / When this changes we may return........

  • Just the facts

According to the U.S. Department of Justice:
Blacks are seven times more likely to be homicide victims than whites. Blacks are eight times more likely to commit murder than whites. Memphis is 61% black, 33% white, the remaining 6% Hispanic or Asian. After crunching the numbers the results are as follows for Memphis or any other city where blacks make up a 2/1 majority over whites: For every one murder committed by a white person, sixteen murders have been committed by a black person. Since blacks are double the population and have an eight times higher murder rate, blacks make up the majority of the First 48. In order to find out if this show is "racist", for every sixteen black murder episodes there should be one white episode. Someone who frequents the show should keep tabs on this.As a young black man, I cannot agree that this show is racist. Since blacks are responsible for 16 out of every 17 murders in Memphis, it is no wonder why the vast majority of the accused are black. It's not racist; it's just the facts.

This reminds me of a newspaper article out of Louisianna which reported on the drowning deaths of several black children. The family went to a creek for a bar-b-que, and the children were swimming. After encountering a sudden drop off in the water, they were in over their heads. They all drowned. Who was to blame? The family for letting the children who couldn't swim go in the water? Of course not. We pulled the race card again. The whites were blamed for the children's inability to swim. The reasoning behind it was that during segregation, blacks were not able to learn how to swim since they were banned from public pools, therefore the whites were at fault for the drowing deaths of the children in 2010. The last time I checked, it did not take 40+ years to learn to swim. I blame the parents for their deaths, not the white people who kept us out of the pools. They had every chance to learn to swim. Once again, the race card at work.

I'm sick of it. Wake up people, let's take accountability for our actions. Accountability is a word that has been missing from our vocabulary for quite some time. We don't end up in jail, we choose to break the law and must live with the consequences.  I'll leave you with this:

According to the USDOJ, blacks are 2.5 times as likely to commit a hate crime based on race than whites.

That is a link to the FBI website that shows murderers by race in 2009. The difference between black murderers and white murders is not that huge. I think A&E simply chooses to ignore that fact for the sake of ratings. I tried to go back to the show this season after ignoring it for several years and I am jumping ship again. Not a single show so far this season with a white suspect. C'mon A&E, where is the criminal diversity?

  • Re: The First 48 Racially Biased

Your statistic does not take into account the concentration of the white murders. A film crew for this show needs to be in a place, under one jurisdiction, where there are a high number of murders. Are white people killing people - of course they are. However, lets for the sake of argument stipulate that "last week in texas five white people committed murder"... Those five murders would be in five different jurisdictions, scattered across the state, and may or may not need solving. (For example - the white on white murder in my community, the first one in years I might add, was solved by the guy calling 911 and announcing he just killed his cheating wife. When the police arrived he was sitting on the steps waiting for them. There wasnt enough investigation needed on that one to fill an episode of "The First 48 Seconds". ) If there are five white murders, scattered across texas, and two of the sherrifs say "no you cant film" and another one is an open and shut case, and the other one is a murder suicide , and the final one was some drifter / biker / transient who left the area and left no leads... what is there to film? By comparison - there were five black murders in Harris County last Friday. Five people, one jurisdiction, easy solve....

  • Big RIck's Take

Sorry RIck, you are wrong. The First 48 is definitely biased (racist) in its programming. I wonder if you really are black, or if you have just internalized racism to the point (as many blacks have) where you just don't get it. And by the way, your statistics are way off. Even if they were accurate, the program needs to have balance. It is exactly this type of media that feeds into the minds of white folks, that all crimes are committed by blacks.

  • This program was bringing out the racist in me

I don't consider myself a racist, but after watching the First 48 several times, I began to acquire a racist attitude. The program repeatedly shows blacks killing blacks. The reality is that black people commit 52% of the murders in this country. This show makes it look like blacks commit 90% of the murders.
I started making the mistake of thinking about the first 48 when I would view black people in general -- weak minded mistake. This program brought out the worst in me.

  • Racially Biased

This is a matter that has bothered me for a long time. The First 48 might not be a bad program but they have to balance the racial issue. I can't believe, in this day and age, that they can continue to provide such lopsided reporting. No one questions the violence that occurs in the black community. We have the same issues here in Canada, however these types of crimes are also occurring in white communities, Asian communities and so forth. Come on AETV. Get with it!

  • THE TRUTH (LIKE IT OR NOT)

First I would like to state that the only "race" that matters is the "Human Race".  The days of judging a person by skin color or religion publicly are long behind us.  However, "the race card" is being used probably more now then ever.  Laws had been made to prohibit crimes against a person based on race or religion, hence the term "Hate Crime".  Although in my opinion, all violent crimes against any Human should be deemed a "Hate Crime".  We are all human beings first, and no-one has a right to harm anyone physically (defending yourself obviously is the exception).  One major problem is a lack of accountabilty for one's own actions and "the race card" is mainly used as an excuse for bad behaviour.  "You do the crime, you do the time" is a simple explanation for criminals to understand, and it has nothing to do with your skin color.  It is no secret that most adolescent black males are proud to be "gangstas" and "thugs", but no-one ever asks WHY.  So let us ask the question WHY before we assume it is because of "racism".  It is time to stop making excuses and find the root of the problem.  Is it common knowledge that alot of black men are proud to have many "baby mommas", doesn't that seem like a good place to start to figure out a solution?  What kind of father can these men be to their children?  What kind of role models can these fathers be?  The 13 year old black youth that gets a life sentence for murder was once a sweet 9 year old boy before he was mis-guided in the wrong direction.  It is the responsibility of the parents to guide their children on a life path that benefits that child's future in society.  It is the hardest job on the planet to be a parent and the most important job a person will have in thier life, its importance should not be taken lightly.  Being a "gangsta" or "thug" should not be a goal of any young man, regardless of skin color....and it wasn't society that taught them this.  "Popping a cap in your ass" actually means shooting a bullet from a gun into another human being to kill them, plain and simple, so why is this a sense of pride created only by those in the black community?  These teens are not at war, and should not be taught that they are.  The only people in todays society teaching these boys that their skin color is a downfall in their life is their own community.   Poverty is not an excuse to teach your children to be anti-society.  Poverty is all over the world, not just in black communities.  It seems that black men are perpetuating a myth that their skin color is still a factor for their position in life, that was then and this is now.  It is time to look in the mirror and take accountability.  Your own actions and choices are the ONLY factor that will make or break your life.  WE ARE ALL THE SAME RACE-THE HUMAN RACE!

  • @ BIG RICK. thanks for crunching the numbers and doing some "Research"

I want to thank you for doing research like most people should before they pull the "Race card"... I'm glad that some people are paying attention, not just blurting out something before they stop and think. I have watched every single episode of the "First 48", I don't find it racist at all, if anything I would hope to see more black people complaining about the crimes instead of white or black. I get so upset with the White Murdereres just as well as the Hispanic, Black, Asian, etcetera... It's about the first 48 hours after a HOMICIDE, not the first 48 hours after a black persons homicide. The numbers in witch you talk about are (I have done some research as well) EXTREAMLY accurate. It's not a race issue, or at least it shouldn't be. Watch the show for the content instead of what race did it. I didn't even think of it being a racist show or a "Black" show until these forums brought it up. I see the whites, blacks, Hispanics and so on as victims, as well..not just as the suspects... I feel as much anger towards a white guy that killed a child as I do a black, it sucks !

What concerns me most besides the racism is the fact that the accused are shown even if the case against them is dismissed such as the Honduran guy who allegedly killed his brother. I believe a US citizen would have the legal right to sue the program. Anyhow, I've decided not to watch this program anymore: it's always blacks and latinos obviously without much of a chance in the US.
