  • Is there a pill?

Mom-in-law makes the people on your show look neat and tidy. She also works very hard to stay in denial. "There's nothing wrong," but she's mortified if you ask to have someone over. And if you ask to straighten up just a little, she acts like touching her things is equivelant to raping her. Is there maybe an herbal anti-depressant or anti-anxiety or something I can put in her food? That's about the only solution I can think of.

A psychiatrist could write a prescription for something if she would be willing to get some therapy.
In the mean time, some great books for you to read are "Buried In Treasure" and "Digging Out".

    Best of luck! Wink

As tillie said, if she seeks treatment, a perscription might be recommended. But putting anything into someone else's food without their knowledge and consent is less acceptable than hoarding.

Slipping a roofie in her food is taking a massive gamble. Medications- whether conventional or herbal- have to be dispensed at regular intervals with strict instructions as to dosages. Also, the potential side effects of herbal compounds are ALWAYS under estimated. There's interactions with what's already in her system, allergic reactions and straight out poisoning, because the quality control and trials on herbal meds are NOTHING near as comprehensive as they are on conventional drugs. Just because something is 'natural' it doesn't mean 'safe'. Carbon monoxide is natural. Arsenic is natural. Eastern Taipan venom is natural. And none of these is recommended for your continuing good health.

Just take some photographs and send them off to the relevant authorities in your area. If you're worried about repercussions, take photographs from the outside after twitching the curtains and shades just enough to show a sliver of the inside of the house, and send them in anonymously.

I believe the poster was just joking about a pill to cure hoarding.
Being able to find a little humor along the way helps immensely when dealing with a hoarder. ;)

You thought it was a joke, tillie? I was not certain they would go through with it, but there is a little too much detail there . . . the anti-depressant/anti-anxiety thing . . . for me to consider it completely a joke.

    Humor helps the hoarder, too!!!

Well maybe they will come back here and post some more rather than being just another one post poster and they can explain better.

OMG yes! This times 1000! My mom had a flooding situation in her basement last summer and accepted my help out of sheer desperation. The only way either of us could cope was to laugh our way through it even though we both wanted to cry.

I was also very grateful that the show taught me how to let my mom know that she could trust me with her precious (water soaked, moldy, disgusting) possessions. We only filled one dumpster when 5 would've been more appropriate but it was still an accomplishment.

Try St, John's Wort for depression. It's mild, helps you to feel safe and happy.
