  • AFRAID isn't a letter, it's a person

When was the "AFRAID letter" sent to police? Anybody know approximate date of arrival of letter?  I remember reading that the letter had info that only someone close to EAR would know.  What kind of info would that be? I would suggest that if you (meaning LE) had no idea who EAR was , how could you know that the information you were reading could only be from somebody who actually knew EAR? At this point, wouldnt ANY information be valuable to share?  It seems that if LE determined that the person who wrote AFRAID was close to EAR then they have something "personal" about him that others/we dont have.

What happened to AFRAID?  If AFRAID really was someone close to EAR, maybe they became a victim for what they knew or what they wrote?  If AFRAID was close enough to know things than certainly EAR would have known they were that close too.  AFRAID are you out there? Or is it possible that you they are no longer AFRAID, maybe DEAD instead?

Do you think the AFRAID letter is false info fed to the public?  If not, why would this very personal (so personal that it could ID EAR) be withheld all this time?

Where is AFRAID today?  Do you think this person is satisfied with what LE did with the information that they risked their life to write and mail.  I hope they offered a witness protection program if the info was so  personal that it proved the person must know the EAR.  It seems like the letter is just dangling there like a carrot.  I personally hope the letter is a false tactic, either that or we owe AFRAID an apology for using this intimate info as bait rather than a net to catch EAR.

I dont have to read it, I dont need to know how AFRAID wrote it out , but at least LE could do is leak the identifying facts through another avenue so this identifying information was circulating.  Or maybe they have already.

Anyway, does anyone know the date of the AFRAID letter?

Thank you for hearing my thought.

I haven't finsihed reading the Crompton book yet.  Is the AFRAID  letter discussed or even mentioned?

This is the only article I know of on it:

My personal thought is it is likely from the killer, and misdirected police.

When EAR said things like "I was in the Air Force and they kicked me out" and "I need money to buy drugs", in my opinion these were mostly likely fakes, false clues and misdirection.

That is what I think the AFRAID letter most likely is, though it is hard to know for sure without reading the text.

Perhaps it was a hoax or publicity seeker, but we do know that Sac PD said the letter writer knew inside info, and thus likely had to come from the killer, or as the letter claimed, from a friend of the killer.

My guess is the killer, and I have looked at several unsolved cases, all or some of which may be related, all of which had a Red Herring or False Clue letter, most say they are "helpful citizen with information" OR "friend of killer want to help" letters to the police, but IMO most or all may be from the actual killer(s).  And all have something in common:

    ANONYMOUS

    ARMCHAIR

    AROUSED

    A CITIZEN

    A FRIEND

    AFRAID

    ALLEN

    ARGUS

If anyone can get the text of the AFRAID letter and post it, that would be wonderful.

  • In Common?

I don't understand the list of things in common stated above. Are those different letters from different killers? Or the same killer? Or because they all begin with an A ? Not clear about your list. Thank you.

Yes, I agree. I am quite sure that manipulation and control are baseline characteristics of his make up. You could probably take the "opposite" of every word he says and find the answer. I dont think it is luck that works in his favor as much as it is almost impossible for normal people to "think" like he does. A continuous warped, sick train of thought that has to include destroying people to feel right. That is natural for him, but difficult for normal people. To stay a step ahead of a sadistic pyschopath is a challenge. My hat is off to the detectives that dedicated their lives to trying to do that. Good men. Very good men indeed. Thank you.

The first 5 letters are associated with the Zodiac case, AFRAID with EAR/ONS, the next one from a murder and the last from a bombing.  A while back I started investigating the possibility that all these cases COULD be linked.  There is evidence both for and against the idea that they could be linked.  At some point I discovered all these cases had strange letters, often claiming to be from a "helpful citizen" or a "friend of the killer", and when I wrote then all down, I found some similarities, such as the fact that all start with the letter "A".

What does it mean?  I don't know.  It may mean nothing.  But I note it as one possible pattern.

I haven't finished Sudden Terror yet.  Does anyone know if the AFRAID letter is discussed?

I wish we could know the text of that letter.  if we did, someone may recognize certain words or phrases used by the writer.  That might help us identify this "friend of the killer", if that is what he is, which would put us closer to the killer, or it may help us identify the killer directly.  It certainly can't hurt anything for the public to know the text.

  • Thanks for the link.

Thank you for the link to the article about AFRAID. I had not seen that before. When I opened the link, I saw that ELVIS' death was the headline. I thought I mistakenly got an article on Elvis' unfortunate demise. Directly underneath ELVIS news was the EAR/AFRAID article. I bet EAR relished upon the idea that he made the papers with Elvis. An unlikely pairing EAR/ELVIS. RIP Elvis.
