  • LA Magazine article

the March issue of LA Magazine, will have an ONS article, viewable online at  www.lamag,com on Wednesday, Feb. 27th (hard copies are now available at some LA area libraries).  The only new thing I saw was that there is a handwriting sample from ONS--maybe relatives of POIs can verify it?  This may be especially good if ONS is deceased and DNA is not available.

On Wednesday online there will also be a clip of what investigators believe may be his voice --- a wrong number call to a victim, same victim that got the infamous heavy breathing call.  This call is a man's voice asking, "Is Ray there?" but it's much clearer and more identifiable than the obscene call.  I wonder who Ray is?

Has anyone else had difficulties with the link jgg put up for LA mag? I cannot access it. g
Hi g, Yes, I had a problem. I found that I have to type out www.losangelesmagazine.com and then can get through.

The reason is does not work is because he has put a comma instead of a full stop in the link.

I listened to your radio interview Mishmac and you did very well getting your message across.Well done

a brilliant article well done Mishmac.
In the " is Ray there" phonecall you can here that the guy has a slightly higher toned voice.I would be very surprised if the voice was not him. Before mobile phones were around and it was just house phones that were used, we would rarely get a wrong number call.Once every 6 months at the very most. This wrong number call happened just a few hours before the infamous "Gonna Kill You" call. My point is its just got to have been him.

He has very neat handwriting for a male. It would be interesting to find out where the map was a map of.Mishmac was it Contra Costa SD that had the map?

Hello Michelle, I really look forward to reading your article and using social media is brilliant. About the name change, I understand what you are saying. It was a really unfortunate name to start with. It is problematic to change as another poster pointed out but it was needed to be done, I wish it would have been an outrageous, attention grabbing name. The names Jack the Ripper, The Zodiac grab the public's interest to this day. My vote would have been something along the lines of "The micropenis killer" "The Tiny Package Killer" "The California Basher" The first two offensive first names I mentioned are actually something that could possibly quickly bring in a good lead if we didn't have to worry about offending. Well, I guess it's too late for that but I do have high hopes something great results from your hard work.
Sandia, you must have been reading my mind. I thought of the exact same thing. Add to the list, "The Limp Member Murderer", "The Latent Homosexual Basher", "The Couple Killer" and "The Necrophilia Ninja".
How about The Wee Willy Killer,Tiny Tadger Killer or the Small Boaby Killer.I really like to ridicule him and would love to do it to his face.

  • Seriously

The map looks like generic shopping center, artificial lake, planned community. Are there any clues as to the location. It looks like a copy of a developers layout map. Or those diorama thingies the upscale developers made up and kept on display in the sales office.

Post links to the story in every media outlet (local paper, TV station websites, etc). If there's a DNA story post a link or if the outlet doesn't allow link posting give the web address.

I don't know what to make of this map. It was found with a homework assignment? That doesn't seem to fit. It is interesting how some of the homes are erased or missing and one home is blacked out. It is the kind of map I would expect this guy to have. Unfortunately it would seem doubtful that it will help catch him.

If that journal entry was not left as a joke by him, then he's a textbook psychopath. Poor baby.

Also, he misspelled punishment as "PUNSHMENT". He also made an error in his journal entry.

The sensitive material area is bring up, "Sorry, but this forum is no longer taking submissions."

This is waaay too much for me to process atm ...my brain is spazzing.

Very odd. Maybe it was left on purpose by him. Or maybe he was using the unused pages of a high school notebook. I wonder what the nature of the homework assignment was ie. what grade level.  I think there is more to all this than meets the eye.  Larry Pool and the FBI have been planning this release for some time.  I guess time will tell.

Also my quick impression of the voice in the call about Ray: his voice is young sounding, almost def'ly in the 18-25 yr old range. And it's tight; he knows that there is no Ray there and he is cranking. Crank calls were VERY common in that era. I did them, and my voice sounded just like that, and so did the voices of the friends I might be doing the pranks with sound like that. Tight at the back of the throat and rushed, because you have a certain script to say. HE knows she is going to say, "No, wrong number," and so he rushes what he says next.

Also, if his throat was relaxed, then he was probably more on the nerd spectrum of socialization. Maybe a kid with ADHD in class and not well-liked. He had a lot of time to cull his hatred. 6th grade is a typical time when sexuality is starting to bloom.

    Just sayin.

That sounded more personal than an assignment. Also, youd expect a 6th grader to write something like that. I think he was writing as justification for what he was doing. The crying is almost def'ly real in light of this. He was somewhat conflicted and that boosted his hatred and reasons for why the bitches needed some of his "punshment."

  • Photos really bring it all home

Mrs. McNamara really hit a homerun with this piece.  A lot of information to digest.  The photos in particular, to me, really bring it home.  They are so immediate to the time.

I have always had a hard time looking at Patrice Harrington.  Such a pretty lady.  It just makes you so damn angry when you stop and think about these peoples lives and how they were so unfairly taken.

I really do hope, as I know we all do, that this newest round of media blitz will be the time that there is finally some closure.

Just wanted to check in quickly. They tell me the writer’s cut area is back up and working. Apologies. Posters should definitely check that area out, because it has these little "one off" pieces of writing that focuses on individual cases.

I agree one of the most puzzling aspects of the homework evidence is the seeming disparity in skill level, that the same person that drew the map was also writing about General Custer, and ranting about his mistreatment in 6th grade. One civil engineer that gave feedback to investigators said something interesting, that in his experience it’s not unusual for people with strong spatial skills (architects, civil engineers) to have trouble with language, or even to suffer from dyslexia. Looking at “Mad is the Word” with that in mind --- a kid humiliated by his teacher for his struggles with reading and writing --- is interesting.

Experts said this map showed interest and some level of knowledge, but nothing sophisticated. They said it reminded them of someone maybe applying for a college program, at that level. UC Davis had/has a popular landscape architecture program.

  • What

do you guys think of his handwriting? I personally think it is quite neat.
Someone said (Guessting I think) that the head of the task force was called Ray. So he was maybe just testing the water before making his threatening call, checking to see if there was any chance of his call getting traced.

  • Does anyone see anything else in the writing?

Does anyone see SNELLING, possibly? Other names? "Come from"???? Name crossed out in right hand corner? "Milling" Jen@? at bottom of page????
Briffy, it was Port who provided the information about Ray. I believe she is referring to Ray Root.g

  • Getting the word out

One thing that would be really helpful, if someone is willing to help me with this, would be to get the link to people that have impact in each of the jurisdictions, so media people, community figures, what not. To have them Tweet about it would be ideal. Not from the magazine's standpoint, because that's not going to help us sell magazines, but in the interest of actually catching this guy...people in Sac, Visalia, Santa Barbara, Irvine need to see this. I'm being inundated with emails right now, which is great, but I need help getting the word out to those jurisdictions, and if anyone could help out, much appreciated.

It's a good article. I do not have a POI that has the same voice as that of the caller. I know that for sure.
