  • Completely STAGED

I watched this show twice and there is NO WAY that the things "found" in abandonded storage units are "REAL".

My close friend's family ran a storage facility for close to 30 years and it is RARE that anything of value comes out of a unit that has been abandonded.  As a matter of fact THAT is one of the reasons why it because popular to auction off the unit and it's contents!

Most of the stuff in storage sheds is worthless household goods, clothing and most popular - baby items and toys.

It was extremely rare that anything of value was pulled out of an abandonded storage unti.  As a matter of fact we used to marvel at the fact that people would spend $50-$100 a month to store junk that should have been donated to the Goodwill!

This show is so fake it isn't even fun to watch.

    Two thumbs down from me!

It is really a lousy show. The cast is really pitiful and the thought of a winner in every locker is just a lie. This thing will now last long.

There seems to be a bit too many things people wouldn't forget, true. I can understand finding things along the lines of tools because they re-sell easy in many areas and power saws are not something many people worry about when figuring out inheritance. The detailing trailer is what tossed me off, no one who invested into that would just leave it there because no one would buy it just to leave in in a storage unit. Keep it on your personal farm, a siblings property, but don't put it somewhere you can lose it if you forget to pay your bills.

I can't believe some one would store their Picasso drawings in a storage locker. When someone has a whole bunch of old or new silver coins worth about four grand all together they don't it keep in the storage locker and forget to pay the rent every month.

I guess the network doesn't agree with you since they've renewed the show for a big 20 more episodes. I like reality shows like this that look at a little-known aspect of American life.

  • In your dreams

I do this for a living, and about the only thing that is for real is the fact that these auctions really do exist. Aside from that, it is such bogus made-up crap, from the "Playa's" to the things they find in the units I find it hard to believe they put this on TV. If they showed the way it REALLY is, I doubt very many would even attempt to make a living at it. As it is now, everybody thinks they can do it "just like in the movies". I do hold the public accountable also, to a degree, people just seem to be getting dumber by the day. You don't find a gun in every unit, much less one from 1857 that won the west and is worth 70 thousand dollars, or a mini bike that's been stored for years but magically starts on the first pull, or rembrandt's, or piccasso's, or gold bars, or, or, or. C'mon people, think, use a teeny bit of reason here. The crowds have gone from 10-15 people, in some cases to over 100, making it very hard to buy anything. I know it's a free country, but making a show that is totally bogus from start to end? You just ruined some people's jobs. I can weather it but I have friends in this business that can't. It's a 7 day a week job, auctions, craigslist, ebay during the week and flea market on the weekend. Thanks A&E, all for a buck huh.

The original poster is not entirely correct. I attend storage auctions every month and nearly always make a profit from my purchases. I've had some big finds too. It's not at all rare that valuable items come out of an abandoned storage locker...not at all.
That said, the finds they get on this show are huge, and in my experience would represent items found over the course of several years.

To the guy who found it unbelievable that someone would abandon an expensive power washing trailer...that's nothing. A few weeks ago I saw a 2005 Cadillac in awesome condition, inside a storage locker, go for $50. It was among 3 cars, a boat and a motorcycle we saw that day. They most vehicles I'd ever seen in a day at the storage auctions.
The American economy is a big one...there are 10000 storage auctions a day...do the math, there are plenty of big-find units out there.

No doubt they don't show the bad ones and re-stage the auctions, but as far as the items...they are in a major metropolitan area...people die, people go to jail.. and people reach a point where they don't care about their material things any more. I know that my storage company goes into fast forward if I'm a week or so late on my payment. So I absolutely believe treasure can be found...and that;s the appeal of all these shows its a treasure hunt

I think treasure can be found too, but how do we get to the point where we can see things for what they really are and act from a more REAL place when treasure hunting in that we know the true worth of things, etc.

Love the one that aired tonight where Darrell found cash taped behind a painting....was clearly planted by him and his kid there and they did a horrible job acting like they "found" it.....100% staged, at least that scene

and that means absolutely nothing... A 2005 cadillac probably has a lien recorded on the title, and was up for recovery, and as such belongs to the finance company NOT the buyer of the storage unit. So the guy bought a storage unit for $50 that housed a car that goes back to the lienholder. Same with stolen goods.. Storage unit sales do not clear title if there is an encumbrance on it.

  • Completely Staged?

100% staged?  I don't think so....I would say probably around 20-25%.   I have found such items.  In these last 4 months, I have found coin collections, stamp collections, indy, baseball, hockey signed autographs.  At this point I really don't know how much there worth?  All types of basebal cards from the 60's,  Different types of sterling, some gold.  Lots of antiques.  This is to say just a sampling of what I have.  I only do this as a recreation, not as a business.  I have a business and trying to expand.    Yes, I don't know why people leave coin collections in there units and then leave it.  I believe after about 3 - 6 months people seem to foget exactly what they put in these units.

You have a choice to pick and choose the unit  you want to buy.  Maybe I am lucky?  I have picked some that were just "breaking even".   When I have a chance, I travel no more than 2 hours from a unit.  I don't always except to buy one either.

I will be going today and cleaning one unit out.  It's been there for 26 years.  Go figure.  That's about 30,000 dollars, that I have added up it cost to rent it, for the past 26 year renting.  What is in this unit that would be worth that much?  I have seen haywood wakefield chairs, and alot of cigerette promotions.  Anything else, I don't know yet?  I have only cleaned out an area of 4 x 6 so far.  It's a 10 x 25 unit and will take me the rest of the month to clean it out.

Believe me it's fun but alot of work.  If you don't mind work..  I don't what's harder, digging for sapphires in Montana or digging out a storage unit?

    Thanks

and as you note - "you have no idea what they are worth". Fact is most stamp and coin collections are worth somewhere between nothing and face value. I collect both stamps and coins - and can tell you that most US stamps are sold by THE POUND if not mint. Even if they are mint most are worth pennies over face value... People assume just because something is old it is valuable. Case in point - my exwife bought a fairly large stamp US collection with hundreds of stamps dating from the 1960's to the 1800's for $150 at a garage sale. In reality it was worth less than $10. Sure each page had lots and lots of stamps - but none of the key high value ones. I could put out a pile of 100+ US stamps from the early 1900's and that whole pile wouldnt be worth $1 because there sure wouldnt be any graf zepplins, jenny airmails, pan america expo etc in there... Ditto for coins - unless in a slabbed graded "Mint State" most wheat pennies are worth a penny. There are a couple of "key dates" that are woth a few dollars, but in US lincoln pennies - there are only four that are worth any real money. I dont dispute there are stamp and coin collections in a lot of units - but they are there AFTER the pawn shop or stamp and coin store guy said "Its worthless, not interested". My collections are worth something - not tens of thousands like the ones on the show - but valuable nonetheless. As a result - they have never seen my storage unit. My stamp and coin collections are in a safe, that is locked inside the gun safe, in the dark, inside my climate controlled alarmed house protected by a 150 pound boerbol. If they were to be in a storage unit - they would become worthless in a matter of months just from the storage conditions.

I never knew that you had to have coins in climate control. I mean I'm sure that over a period of time they can become damaged. But I'm just wondering exactly what the environmental issues are that can tarnish or destroy coins? Do you need to keep them at a specific humidity and is there a special way of wrapping them that you need to do as well?

  • Re: Completely STAGED

There are a number of environmental factors. Of course first and foremost - humidity. Another would be temperature extremes which accellerate the actions of corrosives. (At 100 degrees something will corrrode far faster than at 70) Also acid free paper. Conventional paper has acid it it from the final wash. Next would be contact with dissimilar metals. Each metal has a different reactivity - so if you mix coins or have them in contact with a steel box, etc they will corrode agressively. This can be as simple as having zinc pennies touch copper pennies, silver coins touching non silver etc...I dont have the exact museum quality specs cause mine arent super valuable - but I keep mine at a steady 70 degrees, in the dark, with each one in a space in an acid free album (or slabbed). No storing in boxes, or cans or envelopes etc Each one is in an album space, no two touching...

I was watching a rerun last night, I think it was the episode when Barrie finds the tinkered hard-hats.  Anyways, Darrel is wearing a black t-shirt  that advertises Dave's store on the back.  Did anyone else notice that?

Sometimes I think it would be helpful for people to take pictures of their things in their storage units so they are better able to get rid of them, give then away, etc. and move on
