Breakout Kings - S01E01 ("Pilot)

“When convicted murderer August Tillman (Jason Cerbone) escapes from prison, U.S. Marshal Charlie Duchamp (Laz Alonso) enlists the help of former U.S. Marshal Ray Zancanelli (Domenick Lombardozzi) to help recapture Tillman. They take an unorthodox approach to fugitive apprehension by forming a special task force composed of the four most elusive fugitives Ray has ever captured. Convicts Fritz Gunderson (Brock Johnson), Shea Daniels (Malcolm Goodwin), Philly Rotchliffer (Nicole Steinwedell), and Lloyd Lowery (Jimmi Simpson) agree to assist in the case in exchange for time off their sentences. Julianne Simms (Brooke Nevin) also joins the team as an analyst. Tillman, who conducted a bank robbery prior to his conviction, begins to hunt down the members involved in the robbery in an effort to get the money. Gunderson attempts to make an escape by stealing a knife and is sent back to prison. The team suspects an inside job at the bank and is correct in identifying a teller. His daughter is taken hostage until Tillman gets his money. However the team stops him at the Canada/U.S. border, preventing any harm to the teller and his daughter.” (Brief summary of the Pilot episode from Wikipedia.org) I recently started watching Breakout Kings and I thought the “Pilot” episode showed the purpose of the show well, and the plot was not confusing. I liked the message that the show conveyed too: “It takes a thief to catch a thief.” The show’s characters use convicts to catch fugitives (escaped convicts). I think this idea is very original and I find it interesting how the characters interact with each other. In order for this special task force to be successful, there must be a strong trust between the U.S. Marshalls and the convicts. At the beginning of the episode, Charlie does not trust the convicts because he doesn’t believe working with them will be the best idea. Nevertheless, he trusts Ray enough to go forward with this plan. Though Ray and Charlie seem to have different methods of approaching a problem, I believe that they will trust each other more in later episodes and develop a strong friendship because the most opposite personalities attract. If there were no trust between the Marshalls and convicts, then the escaped convict would never be caught. Of course, trust must be earned, but I think Lloyd, Philly, and Shea have proven themselves good allies to have. Overall, I think the Pilot episode was a great introduction to a great series and I am looking forward to watching more episodes. My favourite character so far is Lloyd because he’s very interesting on screen and captures my attention.

Breakout Kings – S01E02 (“Collected”)

“Philly's failure to inform the authorities that she had over a million dollars in a bank account gets her sent back to Muncy Correctional Facility. Taking her place is Erica Reed (Serinda Swan), but Charlie will not tell the others why she was chosen to be on the team. While investigating, Lloyd hits a nerve with Erica by realizing that she had lost custody of her daughter due to her incarceration, and she attacks him and is kept off of the investigation. The team tracks Xavier Price (Jamie McShane), a man convicted of reckless homicide. Two leads send the team to two abandoned properties. The first has recently burnt down and in the second they find a woman who has been kept there for months. Price has been collecting women and has murdered the first and was unable to reach the second. The team, in a race against time manages to track down Price and the final woman. Price, cornered, attempts to kill himself in a house fire but is rescued by Ray. Later, Charlie reveals to Ray that Erica is the daughter of a bounty hunter who taught her everything, and when he was tortured and murdered by gang members he helped bring in, she hunted them down and hid the bodies so efficiently that she could only be convicted of weapons charges. Ray, feeling sorry for how he treated her earlier, gives her a photo of her daughter that was contained in her file, and reinstates her place on the team.” –Wikipedia.org synopsisThe second episode of Breakout Kings was spectacular, and in my opinion, better than the first. I was especially interested in the new character, Erica Reed, and in particular, her history, values, and motivation. There is a lot of mystery surrounding her selection for the team, and all that one can figure out is that she is very perceptive and clever (even more so than Lloyd!). At the end, it is revealed that she wants to cut down her sentence so she can see her daughter, whose custody she lost when she was arrested, sooner. Erica appears to have a much different cause for committing her crime than the other convicts. Shea and Philly were both motivated by money, while Lloyd was just looking for a way to prove he could do everything (specifically, something hard, like gambling). Erica, on the other hand, was trying to avenge her father’s cruel death (though she did it in the wrong manner). If she had controlled her anger, she probably would not have ended up in jail. Erica’s values are similar to the other cons (apart from Philly, who seems to care only about money, even to the point of compromising herself). At the end of episode one, we see that Shea values his relationship with his girlfriend, and is eager to get his sentence reduced so that they will be able to reunite. Erica and Ray both value family; Ray cares about his daughter (which is one of the reasons why he stole money, resulting in his arrest), and as we see in this episode, Erica loves her daughter immensely and wants to be able to be a good mother. Lloyd’s values don’t appear to be clear, though in the first episode, he is proud of helping someone other than himself (he tells his mother so on the phone). It’s evident that the main purpose of creating the series Breakout Kings was to garner viewer interest, which in turn generated advertising interest and advertisers, resulting in profits for A&E. However, behind the obvious reasons of making the show, I believe that the producers also wanted to put their own views and morals into each episode. It makes the characters and the show itself more realistic and attractive. I’m hooked!

Website Analysis: aetv.com – Breakout Kings http://www.aetv.com/breakout-kings/ is the homepage of the popular A&E series, Breakout Kings, and has a cluttered, yet organized feel to it. It feels familiar, yet looks unfamiliar. It has a sterile taste to it, while trying to incorporate a feeling of clutter, through the addition of multiple user-input links (Facebook, Twitter). This website has some internal clashes that can affect the audience levels. The point of the website is to attract viewers of the show and to draw in a greater audience that would be simply surfing the homepages of A&E television shows. It is done through descriptions of Breakout Kings and other media, such as full episodes. However, even though the website itself is relatively appealing, it does not do justice to the series. Breakout Kings had many audience members hooked after the first episode, “Pilot”. This led to the second episode, “Collected”, which continued the same positive trend that was set from the first. The success of the show has led to a second season, though statistics indicate that the homepage of Breakout Kings has received only slightly elevated amounts of regular web traffic since the premiere of the show. This shows that the site needs to be improved in order to attract viewers through the internet, which can help the show not only to survive, but to thrive and become a major television series. The site attempts to connect to the viewers through links to Facebook and Twitter. These links allow the viewers to comment on the show. This feedback will help the show improve, and attract more viewers. This proves that A&E values viewer input, and wants to make the show better and more appealing to a wider audience.
